The black and white quills on the porcupines back are used as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened.  The quills can be about 13.8 inches in length and are marked with alternating light and dark bands. They have an average and body length of 23.6-32.7 inches not counting the tail. They can weigh up to 59.5 lbs.
